Surgical Abortion (1st & 2nd trimester)
Abortions are performed through 18 weeks of pregnancy, counting from the
first day of the last normal period.
An ultrasound is performed at your
visit for accurate dating of your pregnancy. This is done right in our
office, along with lab tests (a cbc, and blood typing, group and Rh).
For patients 14-18 weeks of pregnancy, after evaluation by the doctor,
special medications will be administered.
There is a 4 hour waiting
period to give these medications time to work, to make the procedure safer
and easier for the patient.
The procedure used for surgical abortion is vacuum aspiration.
This is
a relatively low-risk procedure, the safest method of abortion available
today.
This procedure is done under local anesthesia; nitrous oxide is
also provided. IV sedation is also available for your comfort however
an adult driver must accompany you to your visit.
Your entire visit will
take approximately three hours from start to finish. The actual abortion
takes approximately 5-7 minutes; the remainder of the time will be allocated
between a medical history, lab work, a conference with the doctor, your
preliminary examination, the procedure itself and a period of recovery.
Prior to your departure, you will be given an antibiotic. You will also
be given a sheet containing postoperative precautions and instructions.
Non-surgical / Medical Abortion
A medical abortion commonly known as non-surgical, RU486 or Abortion Pill is a method of terminating an early pregnancy using
drugs (Mifeprex and Misoprostol) instead of a surgical procedure.
In order
to have a medical abortion you must be 49 days (7 weeks) or less from
the first day of your last normal menstrual period.
An ultrasound will
be performed in our office at the time of your first visit to confirm
that you are early enough into the pregnancy to have a medical abortion.
